Corporate movie – Things that make me motivated!

This movie is about what makes me unique in Europe.

If I have to describe myself in short, am I a glad person who enjoy life and do things, which give me motivation and also make my happy. I love my family and friends, they make me focused and shows me what things in life which are important. I’m targeted and finish what I’ve started. The movie below is a summary of my life and its important elements that make me happy and motivated.

This movie creation is made of elements of combined pictures and movie clips and a song in the backgrounds as well to create a more “active” attribute.

Most of the pictures are selected from my previous photo sessions and spontaneous pictures as well, which have been taken during different periods of times.  However had I create the movie clips in purpose here in Rotterdam at the gym I’m training at, to show that part of my interest.

The movie is divided in three parts.

  • Opening
  • Context
  • Ending

During the opening in the movie am I writing on my CV and personal latter, their I should present myself and describe my interest and thing that make me motivated. I use a personal latter because is a well known thing and it symbolize that I trying to explain myself about who I am.

The context in this movie are divided in four parts, first training and health, then my winter interest, summer interest and last my friends and family.

The movie ending as its starts, I writing at my computer and I ties together the story well by reconnecting with the main purpose. Things that make me motivated and unique in Europe.

WHAT IS LEARNING?

THEORIES OF LEARNING

There is many ways to learn thing and by using different methods and theories can new knowledge be created. By construction knowledge as a framework as a dynamic internal process, which is created on the including environment/the context, which you’re in, visual language can be used by all senses, whatever method is used.

Definitions of learning:

“The relatively permanent change in a person’s knowledge or behavior due to experience”  (Mayer, 1982, p. 1040).

“An enduring changes in behavior, or in the capacity to behave in a given fashion, which results from practice or other forms of experience” (Shuell, 1986, p. 412).

Some learning methods are summarized presented below:

Behaviorism is a process of associating the stimulus with response, which produces a new behavior. This learning method is therefore defined as a change in the behavior of the learner. It focuses on the skills and behavioral outcomes of the learning process.

Cognitivism learning method is based on how information must be presented in a organized mannar to achieve the most effective way to learn.  Active participants and use of information as an input for a mind process, which you can use later for learning, are an example to achieve this method of learning. It focuses on the cognitive processes involved in learning as well as how the brain works.

Constructivism is a learning theory that argues that humans construct meaning from current knowledge structures “Constructivism is the study of a learner’s own construction of knowledge”

Connectivismis a learning theory, in which knowledge exists outside of the learner; how we put information between different contexts and find connections, which can build new knowledge.

VC AND VKB

The term visual knowledge building is a combination of two definitions, which are visual knowledge building and visual communication.

During the minor have the definition of visual knowledge building appear clearer for me then before. It’s not just improves knowledge bye visual aids and in that way embrace new knowledge.  By including creativity approaches and different interpretations methods, which can be supported by text, different shapes, environment and etc. can a visual knowledge building be performed.

The term communication in this field have also been develop a greater impact of the subject then before for me. It’s only to convey a message; it’s how the makers have chose to convey the message and which methods have been used to target the right interpretation.

I like to take photographs and I think I’m a visual person. But during this minor have I learn and understand the affect to combine visual aids in pictures. By include a powerful text for example, may the whole interpretation be easier or totally different. This can perform many benefits and misunderstandings can be avoid be using different visual aids as text, signs symbols, logos and etc.

Visual Knowledge Building

The learning systems have been changed during the years and physical things as a book and teacher in classrooms have been replaced by Internet courses and E-books.  Sources as social medias has created an opportunity for people to embrace and interact with new knowledge by the easy ability to meeting different kind of people and cultures. By using Internet as a connection point are classrooms for teaching as well unnecessary, by using connection points as Blackboard can course material for example PowerPoint’s be uploaded.

That has been a of a great use in this minor to have the opportunity to went back at the PowerPoint’s at Blackboard again after the lesson in try to get a better understanding of the material and combined that with new found knowledge from the course book, Visual language.

Visual communication

I think visual communication include everything in our surrounding. Everything we can see everyday and everywhere. If you walk at the street can you see them everywhere, sign, symbols and images and by the semiotics can this things be correct interpreted.

This can be difficult because different countries and cultures may have different sign and symbols and can lead to misunderstands and wrong interpreting. In many cases can the combination of text and images works well as a visual aids to clarify the message but it has their disadvantages too if the languages are unknown.

stopsignrgbStop_sign_China.svg

Figure 1 – Swedish stop sign Figure 2 – Chinese stop sign

Here is an example of a stop sign, one from Sweden and one from China. We can understand there main purpose that we have to stop before this sign, but because of the text differences can a misunderstand happened. That’s why the visual understanding are so important today and I will explain later on how this can be performed as a great tool to use.

Visual Communication and Visual Knowledge Building is a growing form of our modern age learning and by this minors have I start to understand things different then before, which I know will help me in my future work as a engineer. By using different technologies and visual aids am I able to learn faster and understand things more easy then before.

Knowledge and knowledge building

Culture, locations, family, experiences, education and so on are sources for knowledge building, theoretical and practical understanding.

Knowledge building

To create knowledge in different subjects has you to pass two steps, data and information gathering. You can understand a subject and have “data” about it.  To be able to collect more data and understand their relation between each other, you need to understand their pattern, why the different data have a relation to each other (information). When this are performed in a different context in purpose to understand something other, you have created knowledge about the subject. This is how you create new knowledge and proof it by understanding the implementation in different subjects and the recognition of the pattern. Without this knowledge you don’t have the confident understanding of a subject with ability to use it for a specific purpose. I seen knowledge building as an ongoing process (see picture above), by gather information, interpret and process it and gather more during the time (Definition of building by oxford dictionaries; The creation or development of something over a period of time). This will give sporadically outcome of knowledge during the time of the ongoing process.

Presentation2

Knowledge building can be explained as a process of creating new cognitive aspects as a result of common goals, ideas, discussions and so on. It can also be a deep constructivism, which is based on experiential learning through real life experience.

According to Bereiter & Scardamalia, 2003, p. 13 is knowledge building may be defined simply as “the creation, testing, and improvement of conceptual artifacts. It is not confined to education but applies to creative knowledge work of all kinds”.

Example:
You want to learn to drive a snow mobile. You read about it so you know how the theoretical information is about the machine and how to drive. Now you only have the information about it, not the knowledge. When you start to use the theoretical information and try to drive a snow mobile and in that way learn by doing and also implement constructivism may this information fast turn to knowledge. The more practices you done, the more knowledge will you create and by implement the theoretical information about this environment and combined it with constructivism will you with time create a good base of knowledge and can have use of it in other different fields.

data to knowledge

By achieving learning and knowledge by book and lectures and different learning sources as mentioned before, by embrace information, put it in a context, memorize, acting and practice, it will give a meaning and create useful knowledge.

The power of the image

Interpreting of images and usage of implementation of visual language can provide a new and wider understanding for a subject, environment and personality. A interpretation are personal and have their base in a persons previous experiences and culture and so on and when you create a image you must have this in mind, which are my clients and who will interpret my creation and what is my purpose. By using text, symbols and other visual aids may pictures message be clearer and misunderstandings can be avoided in a wider range. Sometimes is the purpose from the artist to send these misunderstandings to the audiences, this is very common in the political context when the try to send out their message. Visual languages can roughly be divided in three steps

  • Observe/describe: what do you see?
  • Interpret: what do you think that it means? What do you make of it?
  • Assess: how ‘good’ is the product?

Use of visual communication has many advantages and there is lot of methods to perform it. I will give my view of the subject below and try to summarize the material from the course, which I have seen as most interesting and instructive.

Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image.

Visual literacy is based on the idea that pictures can be “read” and that meaning can be communicated through a process of reading” (Wikipedia)

Steve Jobs – Stanford speech 2005

Skärmavbild 2014-03-24 kl. 09.41.31

This is a rhetorical analyze of the speech of Steve Jobs when he delivered commencement speech “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” to the graduates of Stanford University on June 12, 2005.

I noted three noteworthy elements in speech:

  • It have a strong opening
  • Theme of birth/death/rebirth.
  • Simple structure

These three elements have a big importance how Steve Jobs have created his speech and also how he has include the rhetorical aspects ethos, Pathos and logos into it.

Steve Jobs opening the speech with “I am honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world.” He mention early in the speech that he never graduates from the collage (“I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation”) and this shows his humility about how great work the students does and also makes them to feel good and keep attention. He try to be personal and talking about rights and wrongs and his emotional feelings about his disappointment and bewilderment about his chose of collage, when he wasting his parents saved money to something he don’t wanted to be. Due to his stories, he creates a persona about himself and he makes himself out to be a person who carries on even in the darkest of times and who has overcome many obstacles when things didn’t look good. By describing life events and how close he was to death, he awoke much emotional feelings and aslo breaks down the barriers between his personality and professional roles.

Through Jobs strong opening and by present a persona of himself and talking about life experiences, creates the ethos aspect to this speech and by talking about death and as well happiness, makes a strong emotionality by the whole story. This also includes the rhetorical aspect pathos.

One more reason why this story awoke attention as the audiences and keep them interested during the whole speech are because of its simple structure (logos), which is a part of the aspect in rhetoric.

The speech can be divided in three parts.

Skärmavbild 2014-03-24 kl. 09.41.45

He tells the audiences in the beginning of the speech “Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.” This creates a curiosity, which is a good way to awake attention and engagement.

Electric and Blended learning

Electronic learning

hämta

Electronic learning or E-learning is a type of distance learning, a flexible way to join classes and different minors without demands of your location. E-learning is often referred to some use of computer and use of different networks and multimedia technologies.

Communication technologies used in E-learning

Communication technologies can be divided in two categorizes, asynchronous and synchronous. Blogs, open forums, emails and digital papers are examples when the participants work by their own, without dependency of other participants involvement at the same time. Synchronous are the opposite to asynchronous, here is the idea to involve more participants in the same “work” during the same period of time. Face to face is one general action within synchronous communication but program as “Google docs” has made it possible to work online at the same document during the same period of time, which include many new opportunities and effectiveness of work. This can be compared with a virtual classroom, their participants joining the same task and can also have a spontaneous communication with each other.

This virtual classrooms and meetings can often use a mix of communication technologies and can also be called blended learning.

Blended learning

A simple definition of blended learning is when e-learning and traditional face-to-face learning in a normal classroom is mixed to perform a learning technology, which can be used for “normal” students and distance students. A good example is when teachers use online forums for their course material and also as a meeting point for students to discuss.

I have many different experiences about E-learning and blended learning and I won’t say it’s something is better then the other or some off them is not good to use, because it depending on how developed the connection tools are. I like to go to normal classes and have a teacher into the front of the classroom, that force me to school to have my classes, which can be hard to motivate if I will be home and try to focus on a recorded lecture for example. There is often many other “more important” things to do then. However, I think by encouraging the students to use computers, tablets and mobiles in the right purpose to lectures, I think a more effective learning can be created.

Digital storytelling

 The LEGO® Story

This movie is about the toy manufacturer LEGO. The movie was created as an animation movie and it tells the history how the company was created, how the name was found and how the development of the company performs during the years.

The movie creations are well executed and have a personal impression because the storyteller is one of the owners. LEGO are a famous company and they are well known worldwide but by the movie do I know now how they have struggled to get there they are today. This is the thing LEGO shows with their movie, they add a now dimension of knowledge to the consumers, who the owners are and their family story.

The movie succeed to connect the personality in the plastic toys they are selling, which can sees as a mass produced thing for children’s and for adults who have not grown up yet, who the owner was, the roots of carpenters profession, it’s a family company and the story and of the ups and downs.

When creating a story are there some criterias that is good to use to ensure a good result.

  • Structure of the story
  • The context/aim/subject
  • Technic to tell the story (ex. Voice over)
  • Duration
  • Communication style
  • Engagement

The Story of LEGO is a good example of these criterias and how it can be implemented in a storytelling movie.  The structure in this movie is like a “normal” story, it ending with its starting point.  A man,  which are the last owner of the company tells the story about the family company and it’s his voice we hear the whole story (voice over) and he will take us back in the time from the first owner till his own time and tell us what happened there between. The visual communication in the movie is clear and understandable because they use a combination of voice and images/movie illustration. This holds the engagement and attention of the story of the audiences. Its duration is about 17 minutes and  by leaving the payoff of until the end of the movie as it hard to stop watch.

I think many people have some kind of relation to LEGO and that evokes emotions feelings about the story and the audiences can relate thing with them self.

The project

Here is a introduction movie  for one of the assignment in the minor VKB, there a project group shall conduct a concept to improve lifelong learning i Europe.

By investigation of earlier work within this subject and reachers about different taget groups and clients, have this project taget and aim been selected.

Now! Enjoy this movie, which explain our path to the starting point for the development of a concept for lifelong learning in Europe.

The result of this project can you find here and much of the graphic material, which I have done can you also see on mime sketchbook.

Here is a cliffhanger to wake your interested!

VISUAL RHETORIC – The art of speaking and writing effectively

Visual rhetoric questions the persuasiveness of images, and the devices that are used to persuade us.the-rhetorical-triangle

By using rhetoric in visual communication may be pass a message with a specific purpose. Questions about how a website can be designed for awake trustfulness and persuade the viewer it a serious company, and what a photographer tried to persuade the viewer. This things communicate the receivers through Ethos, Pathos and logos and they are together responsible for the persuasiveness of a message.

Ethos  is about the credibility of the rhetor, the person or organization who wants persuade the viewer.

subway-diet-002

This is a typical example of usage of the rhetorical tool ethos. By showing a prior and after picture of a man who tells he dropped 245 pounds by eating two subs a day, they persuades many people by eating subway sandwich will you lose weight.

Here is the visual language clear; by using Michelins tires will you save life, your and your children’s life! Including object that wakes much emotionality, as children or animals will pathos function strike hard.

Logos – Is about rational arguments, a form or arguments based on fact, logic and figures.
